Fastrack Is Changing How Barrel Racers and Ropers Shop for Speed

Speed is the currency in barrel racing and on the head side of team roping, and Fastrack Sale Company just revolutionized the buying and selling of running-bred horses.

Fastrack Is Changing How Barrel Racers and Ropers Shop for Speed

Running Blood Has Always Had a Place in Rodeo

The first-ever PRCA Head Horse of the Year, Cannonball, was a descendant of Man o’ War. The only team roping horse in the ProRodeo Hall of Fame, Walt, was out of a half-Thoroughbred mare. Six-time Head Horse of the Year Scooter, widely considered the greatest in history, traced directly to Three Bars, a Thoroughbred whose sons and grandsons appear five, six, even seven times in the papers of the sport’s most decorated head horses. Clay Tryan spent 15 years making the case on four heavily race-bred horses, three of whom share five Head Horse of the Year awards. All of them could run, all of them scored cold, and all of them lasted. Walt was just as good at 20. Scooter competed for 11 straight years. That longevity isn’t an accident, it’s the Thoroughbred heart girth doing exactly what it was built to do.

The barrel pen has arrived at the same conclusion. Stallions like Dash Ta Fame, Favorite Cartel, Hes Relentless, and PYC Paint Your Wagon didn’t take over futurity and incentive programs by accident. Their offspring have the cardiovascular capacity to run hard out of a turn and the structural efficiency to rate without losing momentum. The barrel world didn’t abandon cow horse breeding, it layered running blood on top of it, chasing the same run-cow cross that built the great head horses.

Compete on Them: Jubilant Version is the Proof of Concept

No horse makes the crossover argument more clearly than Jubilant Version. He came straight off the track, flunked out of the gate, and ended up in Reliance Ranches’ second-career program under four-time PRCA World Champion Bobby Mote before landing with 26-time World Champion Trevor Brazile.

“His speed was amazing, but I’ve rode a lot of fast horses,” Brazile said. “That horse would never overrun a cow. His rate was as impressive as his speed because you never felt like you were out of control.”

JV eventually landed with NFR aggregate champ and reigning American Rodeo champ Clint Summers, who called him the best head horse he’d ever ridden at first contact. He scored perfectly, never moved in the box, and helped Summers make the NFR as a header to become one of only eight people to ever successfully switch disciplines at the Finals. He tied for third in Head Horse of the Year in 2021.

Breed Them: The Genetics Hold Either Way

You don’t have to compete on a race horse to get value out of one. Even if you never plan to swing a leg over a horse straight off the track, the genetics don’t change. A mare with track earnings is a breeding piece. Her foals carry that speed engine whether they go to barrels, a rope pen, or back to the track.

Summers understands this firsthand. He liked JV so much he’s a repeat breeder to his full sibling Winners Version, an earner of $399,046 on the track. Dark NME, a champion filly who earned over $1.7 million and set a track record at Ruidoso, was featured in the first Fastrack sale alongside her frozen embryos. The mare and the next generation, both on the same platform.

What Fastrack Opens Up

Built by industry experts Melanie Smith, Butch Wise, Ty Smith, and Matt Witman, Fastrack is the first dedicated online marketplace for speed-bred horses only: track horses ready for second careers, race-bred prospects, proven mares, and embryos—all in one place, all with full radiographs, vet statements, walking videos, and hair testing on track horses.

Whether you’re shopping for something to compete on or something to build your breeding program around, Fastrack puts the best running bloodlines in front of performance horse buyers who used to need the right connections just to get in the room. Sales run every six to eight weeks year-round at FastrackSales.com. The bloodlines that built Walt, Scooter, and JV are now just a few clicks away.
